"SAYAW" A Solo Art Exhibit
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“I’m so fascinated with dancers and with the dance itself... each time I watch dancers move their bodies and express their feelings through gestures I feel like being tranced to another dimension. Dancing is like painting. It is a medium in order to communicate with people...to communicate with nature, and to communicate with our Creator. “Sayaw” as we call it in Filipino is an art that we always love. In life we need to go along with the music so we can endure all the challenges that we encounter everyday. We can relate on each interpretation that the dancers express, on how each emotion have sprung from their movement, and we only don’t relate to it but we feel them because it’s the reflection of our own being. I was so mesmerized on how the ballerinas sway, the salsa dancers indulge their emotions, the flamenco dancers stamp their feet, and on how the poi dancers jest with the fire. All of these are reflections of our everyday living. It’s how we celebrate life through “Sayaw.”
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
In his first solo exhibit, Buhay painted the spontaneity of life, on how man behaves in a particular situation at a particular moment. He loves to preserve each scene: how man celebrates triumph, the first time we fell in love in a topsy-turvy state , the nostalgia of being far away from someone you dearly love, and the pain from each defeat. His fascination with life inspires him to paint how people tell us their own special tales...and this what inspired him to take a closer look with the art of movement.
He chose Sayaw as his subject because of the gracefulness of the dancers . Each performance shows how man copes up with life in accord to their cultures and nature. Most of his figures show and give different behaviours in a given situation like happiness, warmth of love, hope and peace. These are the things which give us inspiration to embrace our own humanity...and on how we dance to the music of life.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Dwight “Buhay” Mendoza or simply BUHAY is a self-taught artist who paints people that we see everyday, He graphically transfers these into paintings to tell a story and a statement about life. He started doing doodles at a young age of 5 and continuously discover the methods of art. His primary subjects are the human figures, it fascinates him to express a persons character through lines, lights and shadows. His genre is more on expressionism, impressionism and realism. He had his formal training under the wing of renowned artist Sir Fernando B. Sena. His influence are coming from the Impressionists like Monet, Degas, Paul Cezanne and Frederic Bazille. His medium are usually oil, acrylic, watercolour and pastels.
Buhay, as he’s known by his colleagues from Tuesday Group, Sunday Group and the ARTEMANILA, is a hardworking artist working as Customer Service Adviser at night and Artist during day time. His passion for the craft immenses deeply as he began to embrace the life of being an artist. He takes heed on what the essential tools are and on how to develop his skill more and more each day. He even sets quota for himself to create at least a drawing each day in order to improve his skill. He had joined several group shows for the past two years and the most recent one was the “Unwanted Evolution: Jejemon vs Jejebuster organized by ARTEMANILA as well.
